WHAT WE DO:

At Lowry Family Pastures, we bring the heritage Large Black Pig to the Northwest Arkansas/Oklahoma region, raising our pigs the way nature intended.  Our pigs graze on open pasture with fine grasses, enjoy quality feed, and, like any happy pig, spend plenty of time in the mud.

This heritage breed is known for producing exceptional-tasting pork, and we honor that legacy by creating small-batch, artisanal pork products processed with the highest quality standards. From unique sausages and hand-crafted bacon to smoked and cured hams, each product reflects care, tradition, and flavor you can truly taste.

The farm was built on a strong foundation that is rooted in farming practices of the past with an emphasis on artisanal pork production, promotion of the unique flavor profile of the heritage breed, traceability of every cut of meat, and full transparency of the process and production.  Putting a focus on the customer who is seeking high quality pork products from pigs that are raised with traditional farming principles, humane practices and strive for authentic flavors.

With significantly smaller production runs than conventional processors, every cut of pork we produce reflects our passion for heritage breeds, traditional methods, and delivering food that connects people to the land and its stories.

HOW WE DO IT:

We offer our pork products in whole, half, and quarter portions, along with an assortment of individual pork products when available.

To support our small production process we ask for a small deposit for each order with the remaining balance due when we deliver, allowing us to allocate the production in the most efficient way.

Our products are processed by the best USDA production facility in the region, where we are working with them to create unique and artisan cuts that allow our production to stand out among the rest.

Our first limited quantity production will be available in mid-November, claim your order today.

    Large Black Pigs

    The Breed

The Large Black Pig is one of the oldest heritage pig breeds, originally developed in England during the late 1800s. It quickly became prized for its ability to thrive outdoors, its docile nature, and its ability to turn pasture and foraged feed into flavorful, marbled pork.

    Key Characteristics

    • Appearance: True to its name, the breed is all black with large, floppy ears that often cover the eyes. These ears help protect against sunburn and insects when foraging.
    • Temperament: Known for being gentle, calm, and easy to manage, qualities that make them ideal for pasture-based systems.
    • Size: A large-bodied pig with long, deep sides, making them efficient meat producers while still maintaining balance and mobility.

    Heritage & History

    • The breed was established by crossing Cornish black pigs and Devon pigs, creating a strong outdoor grazer suited to the English and American climate.
    • By the mid-20th century, the Large Black was widespread in England, prized for its flavorful pork and bacon.
    • With the rise of commercial pork production focused changed to lean pig breeds that are fast-growing, allowing the Large Black pig breed to fall out of favor and is now considered a rare heritage breed, listed as “vulnerable” by organizations such as The Livestock Conservancy.

    Flavor & Culinary Value

    • Meat Quality: Richly marbled, juicy, and tender pork with a depth of flavor often compared to fine beef.
    • Specialty Cuts: Particularly renowned for bacon and cured meats, thanks to its fat quality and unique flavor profile.
    • Artisanal Appeal: Chefs and food lovers seek out Large Black pork for its distinct taste and the ethical story behind its pasture-based production.

    Why It Matters

    Raising Large Black Pigs supports:

    • Biodiversity – Protecting an endangered heritage breed.
    • Sustainability – Outdoor, pasture-raised pigs improve soil health and live in harmony with the land.
    • Tradition – Preserving the old-world flavor and farming practices that connect us to the past.
